With Roland having had his 40th birthday last year and Katharina’s second 39th birthday just around the corner, our parents made us one of the most precious gifts you can get: Spending quality time together on a trip to Friaul, exploring the places, the food and the culture.
We started our journey in Graz and drove through Kranskja Gora and the Soca valley to our beautiful Fattoria/Hotel at Cividale del Friuli.
The Soca: during World War One it was often red of blood due to the hard battles fought up in the mountains very the river has it’s spring. Nowadays it is a paradise for white water enthusiasts.

On the first evening we took a stroll through Cividale, looking at the nice buildings, the beautiful nature and realizing that we are actually in one of the stage towns of this years Giro d’Italia. Everything was colored in pink. The enthusiasm for hosting the Giro is just unbeatable.

The next day we headed to Trieste. A beautiful city and the most important harbor for the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy back in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. After a walk through the town we took the tram (which is actually both a tram and a funicular on the steepest part of the track), where we had an amazing view over the city.

After that we went along the Rilke path which goes along the shore on the top of cliff giving you fantastic views out to the Adriatic Sea as well as on the Duino castle. If you are there, you shouldn’t miss the stroll.

The next day we had a short walk through Cividale again. But due to the rain, we decided to take the car to go and taste some wines at a closeby local vineyard and do a short round tour. This happend to be a good choice letting us discover a hidden gem, a little convent with an astonishing rose garden in Rosazzo.

After that we went to Vipava first for a little stroll in the town with the 7 springs that form the river Vipava. From there we went to one of the best restaurants you can find in this area (pre-booking is absolutely necessary) – the “Majerija“. Besides the fantastic food you get there you could also stay overnight in rooms built below the extensive herb garden they have. Really something special with a peaceful and quiet atmosphere.

The next day we went to the Castello di Spessa – also known as Casanova’s castle and took a walk in the nice park. After that we went to Castelmonte, which was so quiet, but you could actually see how busy it can get during the touristic season.

In the later afternoon we headed again to another wine tasting. One of the best wineries in Slovenia, yet still very much down to earth, we had actually the wine tasting in the living room of the family, including some antipasti. Of course we had to buy some of the great wines there, too.
From there we went to the next culinary sensation: La Subida – also here, don’t forget to book a table long in advance.

And as with every journey, also this one goes to an end and we went back home again. This time with a short stop at the Pyramidenkogel where we met Katharina’s brother with his wife and little Felix.
Up we went to get a view over the “Wörthersee” and then we took the slide down. What a great fun!!

We really enjoyed it a lot and had a great time together with our parents. Friaul is definitely a place worth revisiting, maybe in combination with some tours on the bicycle…
